Also El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands, and the Danish island Samsø have this ambition. However, Goeree-Overflakkee differs for two essential reasons. In contrast to the other islands, Goeree-Overflakkee is not isolated, but located in one of the most densely populated areas in the world, close to the harbor metropolises Rotterdam and Antwerp. Plus: with nearly 50.000 inhabitants Goeree-Overflakkee offers a different scale than Samsø (About 3,800 inhabitants) and EI Hierro (About 10.000 inhabitants).
